Lice Treatment in New York

What Is Head Lice?

Head lice are human parasites. They live in the hair on the head, and survive by drinking small amounts of blood. They travel from person to person via head-to-head contact (I.e. Hugging, sitting near one another, sharing clothing or combs and brushes). As far as research has shown, lice do not carry or spread disease, and are simply a great nuisance. Lice are most often found in children due to the close contact they have with other children in a school or summer camp setting. Most often, if one child is found to have lice, than it has already spread to another. It is important to check and treat the entire household preventatively for this reason. The main symptoms of head lice is excessive itching, although children will not always have a reaction. Children who do not itch excessively are often not diagnosed with lice quickly.

A fertile adult louse can lay about 5-8 eggs in a day. Even with only one bug in the hair, over 100 eggs can easily be laid in two weeks time.

A typical life cycle for a hatched louse is about 30 days. They begin as tiny nymph, and grow into an adult in about 10 days. A female louse cannot lay eggs until they have mated. Lice will die off the head within 72 hours. The eggs can live up to two weeks before hatching.
